Barefoot History
Barefoot products are completely handmade. The cotton yarn we use has been dyed and woven by hand. All materials including dyes are safe and eco-friendly. The craft skills at Barefoot are timeless. Nothing is mass-produced. If our quality is remarkable, it´s because our methods are.

History
In 1958, Barbara Sansoni, a colourist and artist, created the Barefoot concept out of a need for a rehabilitation program for young Sri Lankan women who had little, schooling and no skills. Today Barefoot is a premier textile design company exporting worldwide.

Philosophy
All Barefoot products are fully hand made from start to finish. The yarn is hand dyed, using premium Swiss colour fast and non-toxic dyes, then hand woven and fashioned into various woven products.

There are no time constraints imposed upon the weavers and needle women, thus assuring the highest quality workmanship. These women are not cheap substitutes for machinery, which is why Barefoot products are relatively expensive and will last a lifetime. Barefoot products are not mass-produced and no two pieces are the same.

Barefoot is not a charitable organisation. The workers receive an honest wage and the joy of being able to support themselves and their thus acquiring dignity and self-respect. The cloth is in demand for its utility and appearance. Designers are encouraged to be innovative and stretch their creative imagination.

'Barefoot is about creation and design. It is about the inspiration and influence at work behind their intense passion for colour and textiles'
